IPE beams are European standard general-purpose I-beams (I-section).

I-beams, also known as steel beams, are long, strip-shaped steel structures with an "I"-shaped cross-section. I-beams are divided into ordinary I-beams and lightweight I-beams. Based on the ratio of flange height to web height, I-beams can be further classified into three types: wide flange, medium flange, and narrow flange. The first two types of I-beams have a height of 10-60 cm. For the same height, lightweight I-beams are characterized by narrower flanges, thinner webs, and lighter weight.

Application characteristics of I-beams
Whether ordinary or lightweight, I-beams, due to their relatively high and narrow cross-sections and the significant difference in moments of inertia between their two principal axes, can only be used directly in members bending within the web plane or as lattice members. They are unsuitable for axially compressed members or members bending perpendicular to the web plane, which severely limits their application. I-beams are widely used in buildings and other metal structures.
Because ordinary and lightweight I-beams have relatively high and narrow cross-sections, their moments of inertia differ significantly between their two principal axes, thus limiting their application range. The selection of I-beams should be based on the requirements of the design drawings.
In structural design, the selection of I-beams should be based on their mechanical properties, chemical properties, weldability, structural dimensions, etc.
